What must we do that we might work the works of God?
What a question they asked Jesus. His response was not a new list…
Instead it was this, This is the work of God.. that you BELIEVE on the One He has sent! (Jn6.28)
3 words characterize the legalistic crowd:
– Fear
– Labor
– Strength
The writer to the Hebrews flips this around to a grace perspective:
– Let us Fear: we have fear too.. but not what you’re thinking.. there’s one thing to be afraid of… coming short of REST! Legalism. A works program. Getting crusty. The poison of legalistic thinking. Fear that!
– Let us Labor: you want to labor? We’re not lazy or sloppy… Let’s labor at this.. Make sure you put every effort into this… labor to enter into His REST!
– Let us hold fast (Strength): you want to hold fast, maintain, work, put strength into anything? How about utilizing the KRATOS strength of God holding fast to this… the Profession (Homologeo) of faith in Jesus Christ! That He has finished the work on your behalf!!!!
Then he adds a new word they know nothing about.
– Let us come boldly, to the throne of Grace and find mercy and grace to help in time of need! (Heb4.16)
